TED: UGC
Larry Lessig gets TEDsters to their feet, whooping and whistling, following this elegant presentation of three stories and an argument. The Net’s most adored lawyer brings together John Philip Sousa, celestial copyrights, and the “ASCAP cartel” to build a case for creative freedom. He pins down the key shortcomings of our dusty, pre-digital intellectual property laws, and reveals how bad laws beget bad code. Then, in an homage to cutting-edge artistry, he throws in some of the most hilarious remixes you’ve ever seen.

Katie
Thursday morning I continued my quest to shoot 20 models for my “Beauty” portfolio. Five models down, 15 to go. Katie stopped in and we shot for a couple of hours. Diane is doing all of the hair and makeup for these photo sessions. Her work is incredible. Awesome work Katie and Diane!

Ceara
Ceara came in to the studio on Wednesday for some beauty shots. This was our first time to work together and I can’t wait to have her back. We got some terrific shots from her session. Here’s one that I really liked.

Digital Photography 1 on 1: Episode 6
It’s finally here! In this episode I explain how to set up a Pocket Wizard system. I also explain how you can mix and match lighting equipment from different manufacturers.
Special thanks to Jeff Carolli for all his help in making this episode. He loaned me the White Lightning and Pocket Wizard equipment AND filmed the video. Thanks Jeff!

Episode 6 coming soon…
Yesterday Jeff Carolli came to the studio and helped me shoot another episode of Digital Photography 1 on 1. Jeff is the real deal, he works in the media department for Intel and knows video inside and out. It was great to have a professional in the studio helping to make the latest video. I had my iPhone close by and snapped a few behind the scenes shots.

We were shooting with 2 cameras and some fancy new audio equipment. The sausage looking thing is a shotgun mic.

I was demonstrating how to use Pocket Wizards on different light setups. We had a White Lightning, Novatron and Profoto system all set up.

Here’s Jeff setting up one of the shots.
The video will be edited very soon and published on YouTube. I’ll also post it here when its ready to go.

TED: Aids in Africa
Emily Oster, a University of Chicago economist, looks at the stats on AIDS in Africa — and comes up with a stunning conclusion: Everything we know about AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is wrong. We look for root causes such as poverty and poor health care — but we also need to factor in, say, the price of coffee, and the routes of long-haul truckers. In short, there is a lot we don’t know; and our assumptions about what we do know may keep us from finding the best way to stop the disease.
