Today was a great day. I bought my dream bike, a BMWK1200 RSA. It has a blue and white paint scheme, heated hand grips (whichI’m sure will come in handy in Arizona), cruise control, luggage rail, etc. It’s a killer bike. I still have my trusty Buell X1, I have no plans to sellit. I just really like the Buell for zipping around the corners and waking upmy neighbors. But on a long haul the Buell is just too uncomfortable. It’s also not a great daily commuter bike. It has no clock, no gas gauge, noluggage rack. It’s made to be lean and mean. The BMW is big and comfy.
I plan on buying some saddlebags and hitting the road next spring. I’ll probablymake a couple trips to LA on this bike too. It’s a great sport/touring bike.
I’ll keep you posted on my bike journeys, and take some pictures along the way.

Monsoon!
We had a massive storm tonight. Torrential rain, incredible lightning, and powerful wind. It’s monsoon season here in Arizona, and I love it! Purple skies, fragrant rain, blooming flowers.I got a shot of some lightning that I thought was pretty neat. I hope you enjoyit too.

Bean

I was playing around with pattern photography tonight. I decided to shoot oneof my favorite subjects; coffee. Mmmm. I shot this using my Canon 10D,Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8 L lens, a single Profoto D4 head, and a diffusion disc. The bean was in a very small dish on the floor. Here’s a shot of my setup:

You can see that I used the diffusion disc to cast a shadow on the bowl. Thismade the light much softer and gave me a much more even light. The panel cutthe light by 2 stops, so I just increased the flash output by the same amount. The black and white panel behind the tripod was for a different setup (see notes below) andhad no impact on this photograph. I just used it to hold my diffusion disc. I used the chair to stand on while taking the picture.
I made some very high resolution wallpapers from this picture. I guess I shouldhave compressed them a bit more to get the file size down, but I was in a hurry.
A couple of notes; The coffee beans in the picture came from my friend Rodolfo inCosta Rica. His dad owns a plantation and he brings me coffee a couple of timesa year. Very yummy!!
The bottle and the black and white panel in the picture was left over from anotherabstract shot. You can see it in my AbstractPhoto gallery.

New Job
Well for all who haven’t heard, I’m starting a new job on Monday. I’m stillat the same company, but I’m going to a new group and will have a different job. I’m leaving the “Application Developer” job and will now be a “Technical Consultant”. I’m still getting all the details for my new position, but I’m excited about the newopportunities. I’m going to miss my old co-workers, but anticipate working withsome really great new folks.
I’m sure the next few weeks will continue to be very busy. I’ll probably betraveling to a few of our other work sites to get to know my virtual co-workers. I’ll try to take a few snapshots so you can enjoy the trips with me.
